My husband has been taking my daughter to the Daddy-Daughter dance as long as I can remember. It started out as a group event, but as friends moved away, or other dads just weren’t interested, it dwindled down to just the two of them. And they seem just fine with that.
Bryan, old fashioned guy that he is, always buys a wrist corsage and in the past, Alyx always had a fancy dress. Now that she’s a teenager, leggings and sequined Chuck Taylors will replace ruffles and bows.
From the pictures they bring home, they are the life of the party, dancing to every song and acting crazy. They truly embody the essence of “dance like no one is watching”. I am so lucky not only to have a daughter who loves her daddy, but a daddy who loves his daughter so much.
This will be the 8th dance Alyx and Bryan have attended, and I can’t help but wonder if this may be their last. With a boyfriend and her first (chaperoned) “date” already under her belt, will Alyx continue to take time out for a date with her Dad?
As I was thinking about this today, Stephen Curtis Chapman’s song, Cinderella, started to play on the radio and I realized, as tears were streaming down my face, that we are already halfway through this song/life with Alyx. Sure, she’s way too young to be considering marriage, but as a friend so bluntly pointed out - we’ve only got 3 or 4 more summers with her and she’ll be off to college and her own life. I can’t bear to think about it.
Will this be Bryan’s last dance with Cinderella? I really hope not. Meanwhile, we’re holding on to every moment, knowing that midnight is going to come all too soon.
I love you, sweet girl.
